Why does my Vauxhall Corsa cut out after one second?

It starts, sounds ok, then cuts out after about one second. Sometimes I can get it to run a bit longer by careful use of the accelerator, and at one point was able to drive it a short distance but it was very low on power. When it runs a bit longer it makes a rattling sound, difficult to say if it is a diesel knock or mechanical sound.
