What happens when your shift indicator is not working?

When you put your vehicle in drive, but it goes into neutral, then your shift indicator is not reading right. This can be a hazardous situation because your vehicle could act unexpectedly, and you will not know which gear your vehicle is really in.

What does the check trans light on shift selector mean?

This display indicates a failure of the CAN communication link, the cat-eyes are illuminated in both the Select and Monitor Display, and “CHECK TRANS” light is usually activated. NOTE: without the CAN link, the Shift Selector cannot display the selected transmission range.

Why is the shift indicator on my 08 XP wrong?

I’m posting this for a friend that I was wheeling with last weekend. He has an 08 XP that was not showing the correct gear selection on the dash display. It was showing “N” when the trans is in neutral, and when the trans is in low. Because of that, he had no four wheel drive engagement.

I released the gearshift and when cycling through the gears found the display showing only W & R (not showing D or N or P) It could be a problem with the AGS (gear selector) – if it is not communicating, the gear won;t display on the instrument cluster.

Is the shift lever in the center console?

No. The only clue something was not right was the light going back and forth between D and R I take it that the shift lever is in a center console stack and that the indicator is on the instrument panel and that whichever gear it is in the symbol for that gear lights up, right? Correct.
