Why are the Revs going up and down when idling?

Also the Temperature Gauge was only working intermittently! I took it to the garage and had the Temperature sensor changed and the warning light cleared and the gauge was now working fine but the Hunting problem is still there???

How can you tell if your car engine is misfiring?

Rough acceleration is a typical sign that your engine is misfiring. Sometimes, the engine will misfire on idle also; your engine sensors will get faulty values, and the air-fuel mixture will get messed up. This can cause a very uneven idle, which can jump up and down, and the engine may also shut off on idle.

How does the engine control unit detect a misfire?

The engine control unit can detect a misfire in some different ways, depending on what car model and engine you have. The engine control module is using a lot of sensors to know when to ignite the spark plug and when to inject the fuel into the cylinder and to optimize the air-fuel mixture.

What should I do if my engine has a rough idle?

Before starting hunting for the source of a rough idle, you can do this simple method to confirm that you have a driveability problem. It’ll work in most cases. 1. Set your transmission to Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual), and apply the parking brake. Start the engine and let it idle. 2. Now, listen to the sound coming out of the tail pipe.

I am happy to report that it was only a dirty throttle body, brought a can of wynns air intake and carb cleaner (£4.29 from Wilco) and didn’t even need to take the throttle body off! sprayed quite a lot in probably about 10 times as i held it open and cleaned with an old toothbrush as i went along.

Why is my car idling up and down?

One reason that your car’s engine could be idling up and down on its own is a dirty mass air flow sensor. The mass air flow sensor attached to your car’s engine is designed to sense the amount of air coming into the air intake and through the throttle valve of your engine.

Why is my car revving all of a sudden?

Dirty/Sticking Throttle Body Another issue that could be causing your car to rev high on its own is a dirty or sticking throttle body valve. A car’s throttle body valve is designed to open and close based on how much throttle is applied to allow more or less air into the engine.

Why are my RPMs so low while idling?

Typically air leaks result in poor mileage. Thanks Nick, you nailed it. After a good cleaning with throttle body cleaner the fluctuations stopped, but the RPMs were still low. I finally replaced it (Ford calls it the IAC valve, stands for idle air control valve) and it’s been running like a champ ever since.

Why does my car rev up when idling?

If your car seems to be revved up to a higher-than-normal RPM while idling, it’s not necessarily a problem. If this problem happens while the engine is cold, it may be part of the engine’s design.

If the idle air control valve did not compensate for these, the idle speed would drop when certain accessories are used. In severe cases, the engine may even stall. The idle air control valve is most important on a cold startup. Problems with the idle air control will be most obvious during this time.
