Rear-facing car seats typically just use the lower anchors (a few can also use the top tether). Forward-facing car seats use the lower anchors AND top tether. All forward-facing child safety seats that use the vehicle’s lower LATCH anchors will come with not only a lower anchor strap, but also a tether strap.
Where does the forward facing car seat need to be?
You must put the forward facing car seat in the center seat if that is where your tether anchor is. If you tether a seat to an anchor in an adjacent seat it can pull the car seat on its side in a crash. The tether must attach to an anchor directly behind the child’s car seat.
