What causes long crank time when cold?

What causes long crank time when cold?

Cold batteries simply don’t produce the same amount of power as warm batteries, and this effect can lead to starting issues. When it’s cold, engine oil becomes thicker and doesn’t flow around the engine as well. This means it’s more difficult to pump through the engine block, placing additional strain on the battery.

Why does my civic hesitation start?

If your Civic is hesitating to start when cold, it’s usually due to the battery struggling to provide enough cold cranking amperage. The first is cranking amps, and the second as cold cranking amperage (CCA). When the weather is nice outside the battery is able to provide it’s full cranking amperage.

How many times should a car crank before starting?

Description: An engine should start up and run in about 2 to 3 seconds of turning the ignition key to the crank over position, if not you have a hard starting condition.

Why is my car having trouble cranking?

If your vehicle won’t start, it’s usually caused by a dying or dead battery, loose or corroded connection cables, a bad alternator or an issue with the starter. It can be hard to determine if you’re dealing with a battery or an alternator problem.

What causes a car to crank longer before starting?

When an engine cranks for a long time before it starts, either spark or fuel is missing or weak and each has its own reasons. A bad coolant sensor, a bad throttle position sensor (TPS), a bad fuel pump or a plugged fuel filter can all cause a lean condition causing long cranking times.

Do you have to turn the key multiple times?

You either have a very clogged fuel filter, or are in need of a new fuel pump. By turning the key several times, you are priming the fuel system up enough to start the vehicle, so you definitely have a fuel issue. Also possibly a leaking fuel pressure regulator (FPR) causing a rich condition.

Do you need to hold the ignition to start a car?

If you hear the starter turn for long enough to start the car, you have the modern starter system. If you need to hold the key in that position until the engine fires up, you have an older generation starter where you could cause damage if turning the key all the way in while the engine is on.

What are symptoms of a bad fuel pump?

Seven Signs Your Fuel Pump Is Going Out

  • Sputtering Engine. Your fuel pump is telling you something if your engine starts to sputter once you’ve hit the top speed on the highway.
  • Overheating Engine.
  • Low Fuel Pressure.
  • Power Loss.
  • Surging Engine.
  • Gas Mileage Decrease.
  • Dead Engine.

Why does my Honda Civic crank but not start?

Since a number of expensive components can cause a crank but no start issue, have a certified technician check for spark and fuel to avoid randomly replacing expensive components that are not returnable once installed and may not correct your issue. Is the Honda Civic battery good for a cold start?

If it’s strong, the battery is fine. Honda alternators are usually good for like 8-10 years, so I’d be surprised if that were failing, but even if it were, you’d have symptoms 100% of the time, not just on cold starts. Autozone/Advance will check your battery for free, just in case.

Why does my civic battery drain after 3 days?

My old battery would drain over 3 days because of my remote start system. If it’s a 2012 with the factory battery, that’s definitely a possibility. However, I think if the battery were dying, the engine wouldn’t even crank for 10 seconds, so there’s probably more going on here.

Why does my Car start hard when it’s cold?

The pressure regulator (relief) valve may have allowed fuel in the line to drain back into the tank. Which when starting the engine would require a longer crank time to get the fuel system back up to pressure. Long as it does not take more than 15 seconds for the engine to start; there is no problem with the car.

When the car starts it idles good. Sometimes when driving the car, it has a small miss in it. When the car starts it runs and drives fine except for the small miss at times. Most of the time it cranks but will not start. I have noticed that the problem seems to be worse with the cold weather. I was thinking about replacing the computer.

Why does the fuel pump not work on Honda Civic?

Forgot to add that when a crankshaft sensor fails the PCM will automatically keep the injectors from injecting fuel on some cars. The fuel pump will sometimes still work and the pressure is good and all but the injectors will not work unless the PCM is recieving a signal from the crank sensor. 13 people found this helpful.
