What does the dots mean on a dipstick?

The dots are there to help you visualize where the level is. They DO NOT equate to one quart for each. If your oil level is at the bottom of the hashes, one quart should take it to the top as was posted before.

Happy new year to all, routinely checked the oil level today and noticed that the dipstick shows somewhat different readings on each side. So the crosshatch side shows a level and the other side shows a different level. So not sure what the actual oil level is….have attached pics.

Where does oil run on Silverado Sierra 5.3?

Checking the oil on my 2012 5.3 is driving me nuts. Same thing as stated before. Oil runs up the side of the stick. I agree it is getting it from the tube. I saw a post talking about roughing up the measurement area with emery cloth or a green pot scrubbing pad.
